How necessary is a cover letter when applying for an industry job? I am looking for a financial analyst type role after being in state and local tax for 3 years. Any advice on how to pivot my career would also be much appreciated 😊

I purposely don’t apply to jobs asking for cover letters, my entire resume won’t even be read so I’m not typing up a paper that’s in reality just a circle-jerk of jargon.

like

Companies that require it are pretentious and you don’t want to work with them anyway. Just wait and get poached by a headhunter from your current job, that way you command high premium.

like

It takes less than 10 minutes to write one. Do it.

a Cover Letter is sometimes MORE Important than the resume. Its what get them to LOOK at your resume...otherwise, they get bombarded...they scrub 95% of the resumes without even viewing them. Also, use keywords in your resume that match the keywords in the employment description...especially in the brief description of the job.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

When would be the right time for me to get an MBA given my background?

I was a teacher for 4 years and transitioned into the corporate world. I have 6 months experience in marketing and that’s what I currently do, but plan for a lateral move in the future. I’ve seen suggestions of 3-7 years experience - does my teaching experience factor in? Or should I consider the 3-7 years only of my corporate time? Or is an MBA sooner a good move because of my big career transition (and future lateral)?

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role. Everybody says there's exit-ops aplenty, but I find myself with less options and even more picky than I did as an ambitious T2 undergrad student. Where do I go from here?
