As a smoker who is very self-conscious about stinking like an old ashtray, I take a sweater or coat to work to smoke in. When I come in from my break, I put my coat in the back room. I carry Altoids and rinse my mouth out with water. I wash my hands. I also wear a light perfume. That's what people smell, my perfume. I've never had a complaint, and I do ask my manager and coworkers if I smell like smoke. No is always the answer - then they ask what perfume I'm wearing because they like it.
I know some folks are really sensitive to perfume; I feel for them. I've decided not to smell like an ashtray - and that's the payoff.
Try to fix the effect. Address the feedback from customers with the people and figure out ways to help it. Washing hands, jacket, something. You will never be in a restaurant where no one smokes.
Hi,
1. you Can inform during your daily briefing that your have received an official complain from the guest and you will to take a dicplinary action if it happens again! without pointing to any one.
2. offer to use a soft jacket while smoking time, to reduce the smell from stocking on the cloths as much as you can.
3. provide refreshment, hand wash sop, perfume and candies.
"Personal hygiene; don't smell like cigarette smoke" is absolutely a reasonable policy to have. Require them to have at least a separate jacket to smoke in and if that isn't enough, they may need a seperate set of clothes. As someone who finds the smell of smoke nauseating, I don't blame customers for complaining. That's not what I want to smell when I'm eating.
Gross. Definitely agree with referencing or implementing a hygiene policy. No one wants to be served by someone who smells like an ashtray.
Just ask them to bring in spray.
an wtf thay make me sick ur going to make it harder on them by cutting hours for how they choices to life there life there body there choice like I don't judge 99.9% of time but I will judge you for all they someone be hating when nothing wrong happend
Isn’t that illegal? Cutting their hours because they smoke cigarettes sounds like an EEOC phone call waiting to happen.
I’ve been a smoker for 30 years. I’ve also been working in the restaurant industry , every position from server to chef to management, for the same amount of time. Not once have I ever had a complaint about me or my smell.
I’d be careful cutting their hours unless you’re ready for a lawsuit.
If they aren’t doing anything wrong, leave it alone. At the most I’d mention the complaints, nicely, and ask if they have mints. Most servers I have known ALWAYS have perfume and mints of some sort as their appearance and smell can greatly affect their tips. They are aware.
However… it is not right to screw with someone’s lively hood just because you don’t like the way they smell.
Maybe they don’t like the way you smell. Maybe they’re being polite and keeping their mouths shut.
