How to not be typecast by recruiters ? I want to switch into a different area of law from Trust and Estates but they only message me about TE roles. They say I could switch once im in a different firm but I know that’s not true in most instances.

That can become a problem in so many cases, people pigeonhole you and will only consider you as doing what you already do. You have to make it clear to people that you want to move into different areas and you aren't content to stay where you are. If you frame it deftly, you may get a recruiter to believe in your ambition for yourself and be helpful.

Recruiters keep typecasting you because your resume and profile strongly signal Trusts and Estates. To change that, remove or downplay T&E-specific language, highlight transferable skills, and update your headline and summary to reflect the area you want to move into. Be direct with recruiters about what you are and are not open to. Very wise to not rely on promises of switching after joining a firm.

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

I am looking for a new job at the end of a long career. I have excellent experience in IP and Supply Chain Management. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. The comparable positions at my company are filled by one of the big executive search firms. Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar.
