How tolerated are mistakes?
I am objectively valued at my firm and no one has talked to me regarding concerns about mistakes I’ve made. I produce good work and am aware of it. But it’s hard because I’m a perfectionist, and I’ve made a handful of pretty good mistakes. I feel like these were ones that just shouldn’t be made as a 5th year.

Everyone makes mistakes. I’m a midlevel, and I’ve seen even partners make some pretty embarrassing and glaring elementary mistakes that I’ve never made lol. The real question is how serious the mistakes are and whether you’re learning from them. I try not to lose sleep over mistakes that are fixable and unlikely to create meaningful risk for the client or the firm. What matters is identifying what went wrong, correcting it, and making sure it doesn’t become a recurring issue. At some point, you also have to chalk the rest up to being human

They call it the “practice” of law for a reason. No one is perfect and anyone who expects complete perfection is delusional. Try not to hold yourself to impossible standards.

I feel like people make it seem like mistakes are the end of the world (and of course we should endeavor to make as few as possible), but they are unavoidable; especially depending on workload and time pressure. That said I think as long as you take steps to correct you will be fine. I struggle with mistakes when I get super swamped and am also learning to let go and realize my mistakes don’t necessarily define me or erase the ~95% great work I do!

Even parents make mistake. As long as you’re readily available, responsive, helpful, you’ll be just fine. Senior folks released from escrow signature pages without client’s approval in a big financing deal and the client actually reopened items afterwards and they’re still here. So just take it easy, do your best and you’ll be OK

I have screwed up spectacularly and people took it as an « eh, we’ll deal with it » and had typos in a pitch document and was chewed out over it for hours. All depends on context but generally as someone else has commented « practice of law »…

I’ve felt seriously burned out at my firm for a long time, and now during this point in the year I’ve reached a new level of struggle in terms of trying to be productive. I’m hoping things will change in the new year but I find myself browsing fishbowl and Reddit and struggling to stay on task now more so than ever, and I’m feeling super guilty about it. On my plate in terms of work are reports that are basically data entry, and incredibly menial discovery responses. Help!

So... how can I become more involved with MEPs?

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

I have been looking at the curriculums for Harvard Business School's Master of Business Administration and Harvard Extension School's Master's in Management. They both have the same requirements, generally speaking, including a field immersion course that serves as a capstone in the Master's in Management, which is fairly new. If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Big law literally saved my life. I was working for the government and being sued by creditors and in a deep, dark place. I wasn't even able to afford my Ube transfer application on my own. Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
