How would you bring up to a partner that you're getting burned out. I've been +200 hours for several months with the last two being 250+

Say something along the lines that you would like to take a bit off your plate because you think the quantity of work is starting to affect its quality.

Are you billing more than most of your peers? If not, it’s the expectation and perhaps not the best fit.

2000 for bonus and plenty of people get promoted to partner on 100% utilization. Are there any firms that don't pay bonus at 100% utilization??

The approach depends on your level and where you fall with your peers, but if you are at cap, you can turn down assignments. They would rather have 180-200 consistent hours from you than you quitting which would be 0 hours. They clearly trust you and might be leaning too heavily on you. Best way is to strategize with a trusted mentor.

There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think? PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?
