I’ve experienced no “systemic racism” in my 31 years of service. I’ve encountered episodic challenges that can’t exclusively be attributed to racism, but that’s the nature of our cultures coming together. The way you’ve phrased the question makes it seem like you’re wanting to validate the premise there is “systemic racism”.
Agree with Director. The phrasing used insinuates the issue is rampant throughout the system. If you feel “cheated”, remove yourself from the center and see it from a different angle. Did you do something you were not supposed to do or told to do a different way but did it yours anyways? Not study hard enough? One thing I preached during my 24 years in, was to “own your actions”. We all make mistakes and learn from it. If you still feel “cheated” then take it up the chain.
As a retired Veteran, what I saw the majority of the time was a culture of pretending it didn’t exist within our subculture. A lot of programs/slogans were in place to suggest it would not be tolerated and to report it. And there were just as many briefings sharing the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness. But at the end of the day, we faced these issues daily. It was displayed in many areas from preferential treatment, a true lack of inclusion, to recognition and promotion programs. It exists
I've never experienced it personally. But it doesn't mean that it is not happening around us. I've witnessed a few instances but they were immediately solved.
I’m my 20 years, I have never witnessed any racism. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen because we don’t live in a perfect world. I just know it’s hard to have hate for someone you train, eat, and sometimes spoon with, and get to know each and every day. It’s just not possible. Besides hate is something you build over time not something you are born with.
Racism did not exist within our ranks. If it did, I will sure be against it. There shouldn't be anything of that sort in any industry, field or profession.
