He should probably try to address some of that past trauma before enlisting. It would hopefully make the process a bit more manageable for him!
Basic training can definitely dredge up past, unresolved traumas. Don't let that dissuade him though. I think it makes you a better, stronger person in the end.
It's pretty intense, and you're right, the physical stuff isn't as difficult for a lot of people as the emotional stress. The whole point is to help you become immune to whatever is going on around you, so you're able to focus on your goal alone.
A word of advice, that past trauma can jump out at you when you're least expecting it. I had a really awful childhood and almost didn't make it through basic training. But it's a pretty big trigger for a lot of people and most are able to overcome it.
It's designed to be traumatic because they have to break you down so that they can build you back up stronger. So it sends everyone into panic attacks to one degree or another. If you're worried about your cousin, then I think you owe it to him to have an honest talk about it. There might be more to the situation than you realize, and this might be the best way for him to confront some of those demons. That's what I had to do. Everyone deals with it a bit differently.
