I think many underestimate the mental agility and dexterity that one must have in times of stress and duty.
I feel the same way. Always interesting to hear perspectives from fellow soldiers
Although I'm not planning on holding a rifle ever again I gotta admit it's hard to replicate that feeling you describe in other areas of life
I haven't had to be in an active combat zone, but this makes me a bit nervous about it
That's a pretty good description honestly. It's like all of the information your senses are gathering, including your mental processes and higher reasoning, are laser-focused into a single point at the end of that gun, and you can't think about anything other than that very moment. One microsecond at a time.
There's moments like that, sure. It's not something that people can understand unless they've been there. You can't make a choice to not act, so you fall back upon your training and go into autopilot survival mode. Real rush once you make it out the other end of the situation though. Adrenaline is a crazy thing.
It's always kind of hard to explain what happens to your body in an actual fight or flight situation, time slows down and everything becomes surreal. You're nauseous beyond belief and can only hear your pulse pounding in your ears. And you're sure you won't survive this time... your heart is going to give out, you're certain about it... but it doesn't. Truly amazing what we are capable of handling when we have to. And I think it's impossible to face down your own death without being changed by the experience
