At this point in my life, I'd go with higher salary and less time in office. Work is work and I think it's kind of an illusion to think that fun work would compensate for $40k and all that commuting time. Commuting is the thing I hate most though so could just be me.
Unless money is an absolute deal breaker, the questions that matter are (1) which role will raise or dampen more spirits every day and (2) which role one will build your career over the next two years and (3) which agency is more likely to survive over the next couple of years?
Given the variability in the market, I would also consider which job has the better job security. My assumption is that would be the pharma job.
Now if it was no days in office or 1 day in versus 4-5 days, might be a more weighted decision. If I can live without the extra money I think I'd lean towards the fun one. Other concerns are what CSO1 brings up, what will each one offer longer term? Is there a situation where I’ll be looking for work after a period of time?
Whats the job I’d want after this? If I wanted to accelerate my career in the industry I’d probably take the the cool agency / award potential and jump after 2-3 years. If I was looking to go client side or honestly just take my foot off the accelerator and stop working such terrible hours, I’d take the pharma role
How stable is the cool agency? And are the roles the same? right now I am interviewing for a role that is about $30,000 less than I currently make but the responsibilities are less so I’m OK with it. In my current role, I run an entire department and this one would just be running a large client.
What are your MH issues running a dept? More than just burnout?
Ew pharma. Save that for the wind-down phase of your career. Are you there yet?
I might be there!
I’d take the cool one if your commute isn’t painful and you don’t mind going in. What title/how many YOE do you have? Just so I’m updated on 2025 salaries
I’m obviously at a very different phase in my career, but every move I’ve made was to a place that 1 offered me opportunities to grow as a strategist and 2 offered me opportunities to work on projects that excite me. Thus far, that formula has payed dividends (even if the $ was sometimes been less)
As someone in the uk those numbers are crazy.
So the lesser but better one
