I always thought it was strange that agencies rarely let candidates know the client until they are towards the end of the process. My position has way more job security than others simply because I work for a CPG client. Those in the same role on other accounts (e.g. airlines, hotels, fitness) have been furloughed or even laid off just because of the nature of the industry their client is in. Do we think agencies will have to be more transparent and let candidates ultimately chose the client?

They do that for above average candidates they really want to hire. Unfortunately the average agency sees the average candidate as a cog in the machine who only exists so they can charge clients money.

like

Eh. That's literally the first thing our recruiters let candidates know on a call.

I've not only insisted on knowing the client before signing, I actually got it in writing twice. Two people working at the same big agency but on a different client can have a completely different experience. I don't want to be lobbing ideas at a client who will never, ever buy anything.

like

Im usually told the client on a phone screen.

like

Yeah. I've never not known the client I was interviewing to work on. If they don't tell me, I ask. Valid to get a picture of agency financial health, etc.

Asst Media Planner, it just might be your level, too. They'll place you on whatever whenever. But once you're out of your first gig, that info is usually known.

I work at a boutique (currently ~14 bankers and 10 back office roles). Joined in august. Since august, 3 senior bankers (MD / VP) 1 HR director, and now 2 analysts have left for great opportunities. To be honest I’m happy and like my role, plus it’s too early to think about switching firms already. I am now the only analyst left, we have another one joining in January. Any advice on how I can leverage this for comp discussions at the end of the year?

I reached out to a BCG partner through cold email. Without chatting with me, the partner connected me with a recruiter. The recruiter offered to chat and answered any questions I have but didn’t ask too much abt my background. At the end of the conversation, she said something like “lmk when you apply and I will keep an eye out for you. “The partner definitely didn’t put a referral in cuz she still doesn’t know me yet. Should I let a friend of mine at BCG refer me then let the recruiter?

Anybody else over working in the rat race altogether? I’ve jumped around a few times in the last 5 years, improving my comp and aligning more to my strengths and interests, yet I’m still unfulfilled. I’m pretty much doing exactly what the last 20 years of being in consulting has prepared me for: advising clients at the highest levels - and I’m bored. I’d love to leave and take up a more creative job, but of course, that doesn’t pay the bills - anybody think of, or actually made that transition?
