I’m a Portland attorney also licensed in Washington, and yes, for the most part, the practice in the PNW is that it’s better for everyone to play nice. A lot of the judges out here have very little tolerance for cutthroat nonsense too.
Some of us in the Northeast are still nice, laidback, respectful - yet serious! It really depends on the person you’re dealing with.
I do as well
I’m a Florida attorney and generally approach cases like this. I prefer working in a warm and collegial environment so I am extra nice unless and until you are not. I think it’s maybe 50/50 down here but usually when opposing counsel sees that I am consistently nice, they calm down and reciprocate it. I think living where it’s summer year round helps that though. Makes life much calmer and less stressful ☺️
I practice in a mid-size market where the bar is usually collegial. Legal community is small; reputations travel quickly. Practicing this way is smart. You build rapport with opposing counsel and the judge.
The few times opposing counsel has tried to play games, I’ve had the judge on my client’s side. It’s easy to sway the judge when you have the email receipts showing you’ve been nothing but gracious and the other side is playing stupid games. Once I even had to go for sanctions and got like $8k against opposing counsel personally for really inappropriately using the litigation machinery. I think the juxtaposition between our side’s communications and the other side’s communications really swayed the judge.
DWT?
Which firm was this? 👀
I deal with a few in New Jersey but not many
Yeah I moved from NYC to CA and am still shocked how nice OC is. It’s truly unbelievable sometimes lol.
I'm confused. You said Seattle, but then ask about northeast firms? Seattle is in the northwest.
At the risk of sounding like the jerks I hate to work with …. Read it again
