Hi everyone! I'm posting this question on behalf of my boyfriend who's wrapping up his IT auditing internship from EY. He received an extended offer to continue working with them next fall with $72k base salary and $3k sign on. Does this sound fair? I'm pushing for him to ask for more. His background: 2 Yrs of Taxes, 5 months of reg Audit, 2 months of IT Audit. He's also completing his MS in Accounting by Dec 2022. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

I am really happy that he cleared the rounds. But I am not happy for myself that he is offered L4 Level!
Moreover, I gave 5 DSA in Total and one Googleyness. He gave only 4 DSA and one Googleyness. I kept asking for the levels they are assessing me but they said it totally depends on my performance in rounds. And I swear my all rounds were superb and excellent. That I had asked my recruiter. And there is huge difference in salary. How can I keep myself calm? Google low-balled me and I fought for it but I wasn’t lucky. And it’s not just salary, I can see huge difference in relocation package they give. I really don’t expect this from Google. I really was thankful to the recruiter but the recruiter doesn’t have my respect!
go/paycomparison is a spreadsheet with comparable salaries, but it doesn’t document tenure, education, or whether you had a competing offer upon signing.
I don’t think you have much leverage here OP. You lost it when you signed.
If you request a salary true-up upon first joining, they’re going to decline it. On a medium-term timeline, those that negotiated poorly are brought into line with peers because raises are partially driven by an algorithm. But the shortest path to fixing under leveling is to get promoted.
Thanks for sharing the link. I’ll check that up.
Suggest moving on. Everyone is on a different journey. Also it seems you got promoted to L4 eventually so what’s the major concern?
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, I believe the same. I’ll work hard. I don’t want to leave Google for this matter that soon. I am here for learnings.
I would ask the internal bowl and summarize this if you can.. but the tl;dr is that you don’t have a leg to stand on. You accepted your offer as is.
Also you’re first mention you were offered L3 but then state you’re a 4. I’m unclear on what your level is. If you’re 3 and he’s 4, that’s a natural salary gap.
Thanks for sharing
Comparison is the thief of joy.
If both of you were the same level, it’s still possible you’d be getting paid less. You got your dream job and there is plenty of time to prove yourself, learn, build new relationships and see lots of growth in your career.
I agree to this. Now, I don’t think much about it now. But I want to make it clear it that it’s not just comparison but it was doubting my own capabilities and what could have I done? So, I don’t fall for this again.
And I am sure, if I made it to here. I can be anything.
So here is the question, I was reading an article today where it says “Thanks to the Equality Act of 2010, employees have the right to discuss salary for the purposes of collective bargaining or protection – so that if everyone’s being underpaid, people can come together and ask for more”
- Whom should I talk about this in Google? My Manager or POps?
- Can I compare my salary to my friend, given Equality Act of 2020?
I am in Google Cloud. L4 Software Engineer.
I am firm believer of working hard and don’t talk about salary but now I think this is the time to talk about it.
Holy moly entitlement
OP: I am in the same boat as you are. Joined a year ago as L5. Now my previous company colleagues and some juniors too are joining at L6. The jump from L5 to L6 is hard to make and the compensation difference is massive. What doesn't help is that I came in at the upper end of the comp band for L5. My manager says not much he can do. I am still thinking between leaving Google vs trying the Transfer with Level Change program
What is the avg tenure for L5 to L6 and how big is the TC difference?
I feel you. The exact same thing happened with me.
😢
Hi All, after reading this post i also want to share my story. I have 3YOE ans am offered L3, but the salary is less than many of my peers in the analytics industry. I tried negotiating on the level as well as salary but to no luck, I'm unsure as to how to take the conversation with the recruiter regarding an increase in salary or level. Any suggestions? Don't want to repeat what happened in this post!!
True.. Thanks for your reply!!
