I am in Comm’l real estate now and have a master in Civil. I came out of an internal role as PM for a technology company and managed expansion of their data centers. Comm’l real estate is fast paced and lucrative. You should negotiate an annual bonus of 15-25%. With your experience you should get $115k-$130k in northeast U.S.
Projects vary in size and scope. The brokers are ‘king of the hill’ and is where you will get leads. The one challenge is you are also expected to generate leads and add to the overall revenue of the office. That is the primary part of the job I hate…business development….anymore all professional jobs have a sales component…even doctors!
Development is very enticing. I’ve worked for one in the past. I would recommend using your network to find out what kinda of people they are. A lot of these folks are jerks. They expect to make a lot of money and not pay their designers or contractors fairly. Some are great. The only way to find out what they are like is to find out who worked on the last job and have a conversation. In the right firm, it’s a dream job. In the wrong one, it’s a roller coaster of having to be the agent for shady folks and it feels very ugly.
