I went the other way; had a Commodity Manager position for many years, learned to use Excel, Access amd eventually PowerBI in order to do my job better. I am now focused solely on the Business Intelligence aspects with no direct responsibility for the results of the business. In the earlier role, I was primarily responsible for results, even when most things were out of my control. So, the stress level is less in the more technical role and money is similar. Tech is more transferable
Do you think your commodity manager role helped you gain experience in business? I have never been in the operational role, so not sure if this will block me from career advancement in supply chain.
Honestly, it probably depends on your company and how the roles align. Do you feel you have the experience necessary per the global supply management job listing?
Yes, I have a business background and got CSCP certification and did my masters in operations management. Went through the interview process and got the verbal offer.
That really depends on your goals. If you think you're ready to take on that role, then go ahead. I personally think it's a great opportunity to expand your connection and gain more experience.
Check the scope of the role's responsibilities. You weigh their pros and cons and think which between the two your skills and qualifications is more applicable and fitting. But if you think that switching will be a good move for your career then go for it and take the risk.
This is a pretty personal decision that is based on your career aptitude and what you want. Have you looked into the work/life balance and changes to your lifestyle that would come with the new position? Global supply might require a different set of international responsibilities (travel, coordination internationally). Are you interested in those things?
Global supply management is a great opportunity. If you want a future in supply chain I would for sure so with this position
The supply management role can be stressful as you will be the face of critical issues that will arise and be addressed in S&OPs. Challenging yet rewarding as all other functions rely on you to make the best out of manufacturing issues. All depends on your goals if you want to build cross function relationships go for the new role. If you want to be a coordinator watching from the box seats I’d say stick with product management.
