I don't know that any of us online strangers can answer your question, as it would have to do with your company's policy.
Its better to discuss with your human resources dept to confirm

You need to see if there are any restrictions on return to work after maternity leave to maintain PTO. Usually, yes, but some companies have reatrictions. Just like they do on having to work X amount of time to keep a sign in bonus. Get a copy of the policy in writing and read it closely. Also remember you are likely not accumulating PTO while on maternity leave (again read the policy or ask HR). Depending on how much leave you accumulated, amount you could carry over and if there is a time limit ( like my carryover days expire July1) you have to weigh when is the best time to give notice or if returning for a short time ( days or week) is worth it.
That would probably be a question for your HR department.
Congratulations! Number 1 on your new Baby! I cannot believe how many areas are not clear, but for the most part,
Not an expert, but many many places do not have adequate paid maternity leave, that is why they have short maternity leave, thirty days although not long, in all actuality is.
Think about the work place for a minute, schools, medical offices, retail, offices, etc. people that work in fast paced environments know being short 1 employee is staggering, copies, reports, budgets that are part of jobs that people are out, must be filled in other ways.
So with that in thought, some companies will get a temporary worker, for the month, other areas may also include longer maternity leave, they may have better resources as well funds set aside for these instances.
Many companies also are aware, Mother's may want even more time, and are told to apply for temporary disability, through their local employment agency. They may have to fill out specific details and time of birth along with other details, pay, maternity leave allowed by company etc.
Some Mothers have other concerns, not wanting to leave their newborn with a stranger, or perhaps not having enough funds to have their child put in a top quality day care center. Sometimes Mothers may have post party or better known as, "Baby blues", other areas include needing to continue employment due to financial reasons, as well as having a good job.
It is not easy to leave a job with benefits, plus paying into a 401k, have independence, as well other areas that need to be fulfilled by the employee. So, with that said, I hope I answered your question to the best of my ability.
