Quite sure that it’s not that simple, particularly if you still work for a company located in the city.

I’ve been reading some articles with mixed opinions. Thought I’d ask with all the lawyers and accountants in here 😹
You need to show a permanent intent to live where ever you have moved. For example update address on driver’s license (or get new one if in new state), change your mailing address w postal service, reregister car, don’t go back to NYC regularly, there are a bunch of other factors. I would track the number of days you are in NYC too for your records. Also in NYC there is an amount of time (6 month I think) where if you are over that amount you have to prorate salary for the year and source it to NY/NYC no matter your intent to relocate. Your employer will continue to withhold NY NYC taxes so unless you tell your employer you no longer live in NY, you will need to file a return in NY/NYC to get a refund in 2021. There is a case out there that lays all this shit out. I’ll try to find it.

Here's some common sense advice: wait until the end of the year to see if you'll will need/want/be required to go back. Not worth the hassle. Plus if any of the paperwork goes wrong you'll be SOL. Wait a few more months

Waiting till the end of year is literally a difference of thousands of dollars from where I am now (a state with zero income tax), so I would rather make moves now than later. In all honesty, wouldn’t plan to be back in the city again until late next spring.
