I've never really had a proper mentor before - they've always been super formal and fizzled out after 1-2 sessions. I think it'll be different this time since I've worked with this person a lot and they seem eager to start, but I don't know what to talk about. What are good topics/questions to discuss?

I don't understand why people call themselves "rising x year at ABC". For us who are plain "X year associates", are we doomed to fall?

I’m a second year associate and last night I was online until 2:30 AM waiting for one specialists comment to a purchase agreement. I had added all comments during the day from everyone else, and the midlevel and senior were online as well, but it seemed very strange to ask me to stay up just to add three sentences to a purchase agreement. Is this normal?

Midlaw M&A/Corporate 6th year in LCOL city. Have potential opportunity to go in house for public fintech co. doing substantially similar work. Comp similar to what I make now, but vague on upside. When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite. I offered to send myself but apparently that wouldn’t work (presumably because it would be efficient & make sense.) At what point (and how) do I Just Say No?

The fact that associates are getting laid off right now has me so anxious. I read way more into every single interaction and I feel like I am going to get fired. Anyone else feel like this?
