So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Relax. Even if it is a bloodbath, most will still survive. And there probably isn’t much you can do about a layoff that is coming in the next month or two. Those lists are probably already made and going through internal vetting. But, the fact that this does happen — and it can get a lot worse than it has so far — is a lesson that a lot of us older lawyers went through and internalized. It kind of changes your mental outlook when you realize that, sure you can just get by in the good times, but if the good times ever stop - you don’t want to be on the list of people who were perceived as just getting by. They get cut.

Lots of partners took a big hit - at least in cashflow - during COVID. I think there’s a huge willingness for that kind of cash conservation measure in circumstances where the issue is viewed as being transitory in nature, but where it’s structural (i.e., longer term issue due to changing market conditions), then companies / firms first try to deal with it via natural attrition and slowed hiring. But often times people don’t leave in a recessionary environment or pre-recessionary environment, so that softer touch approach doesn’t work. I thinks that’s where a lot of firms are worried they are at or approaching. That’s when cuts happen. And it’s not all mere self interest. There’s a lot out there on this, but firm’s can go into a downward spiral real, real quick. So defending profits isn’t entirely about greed. In a very meaningful way: It’s about survival. And the most well-to-do partners will - subject to fraudulent conveyance claims - be ok if the firm flops. It’s the employees who really get burned. So a lot of this stuff, which is mistaken for partners always win…well, partner profits is part of it, but partner profits is a much bigger game with potentially far wider consequences if those profits meaningfully drop.
And also don’t assume partners are safe. Under performing partners are usually the first to get whacked in this kind of environment. Performance expectations never stop.
Almost hope I get fired/laid off because I don't have the strength to leave biglaw willingly

No. Because I don’t worry about the things not within my control. I’m not saying don’t CYA, but stressed when you have work and stressed when you don’t is no way to live.

Are you me?
Maybe?? Are you like slightly paralyzed and go from being convinced your fired to convinced you’re fine to updating your resume cause you’re convinced you’re fired again?
hopefully you contributed something earlier and were generally useful, can't blame them if you coasted
Can you elaborate more on what “generally useful” and “coasting” means?
Same :(
1000% yes
I’ve seen this process happen a couple of times. People only get cut if they are relative underperformers.
