I am giving notice at my small firm. The firm is disorganized and dumps way too much on associates without guidance or supervision, which is why I am leaving. There are no good options for attorneys to pick up my work when I leave except the partners who originated the cases and haven’t touched the files in months. The associates are beyond capacity. The partners are also very busy—the firm has taken on more than it can handle. Any tips on navigating this transition process?

It’s not your problem. Just prepare solid transition memos and leave it at that

They can easily hire 1-2 people to replace you, even in a matter of days. I agree it’s not your problem. Do your ethically-required duties to transition and be at peace knowing you are free of this mess.

Make sure you are positive on the way out, give at least two weeks notice, and make sure each of your cases is transitioned. If you do those things, it probably won't burn a bridge unless they are jerks or there is a lot of bad history already. If you screw things up in your transition period (e.g. miss deadlines, don't pass urgent matters off and make sure they are done), they will never trust you with referrals or consider you as a potential rehire. Basically, don't suck and be nicer than you want to be.

As others have said, they chose how to staff those cases, not you. Be courteous in your exit, but you owe nothing more.

What did you think was cool when you were young, but isn't cool now?

Husband and I are planning to rent a car (we wipe the entire inside and handles down with bleach wipes) and drive to a state over (only 5 hours, no pit stops) to pod up with my parents for a month or two. We will be wearing masks and social distancing with my parents until everyone is tested and confirmed negative. My husband goes to the grocery store once a week, other than that we do not interact with others and have taken the pandemic very seriously. Is this a bad idea? Second guessing myself

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.
