I am hoping to relocate to Chicago from Philadelphia this year or next. Wondering if anyone has any tips on lateraling to a firm in a city you are not from/did not attend law school in.

Are you barred in IL yet? If not, I would get started on that process so that you can mention in interviews that you are barred or are in the process of getting barred there. It shows that you’re serious about relocating. Otherwise, talk and network with anyone you know in the area about firm reputations. I recently made a similar move and ended up at an elite boutique firm getting good experience and I hadn’t even heard of it before beginning my search being from the other side of the country. So getting to know the local legal community can be clutch.

Not yet. Since my current firm doesn’t have an IL office, I didn’t want to apply for admission and have them question why. Congrats on your move and thanks for the tips!

Get admitted and network network network. If you can make some contacts and attend events, that may help you get started. If you already know people, start working those contacts.

This worked for me 14 years ago when I moved cities.

See if you can talk to people with influence in Chicago who can help you out, e.g., Dennis Rodman

Thanks, will do! 😂

Practice area?

What size firm? Chicago is a massive legal market that draws from all over so unclear why where you went to school matters unless you are at a small firm where such things may matter. Here is a wild idea…reach out to a recruiter.

I’m working with recruiters already. I thought it was obvious that I would start there, but that’s a poor assumption on my part I guess. This post intended to see if anyone had any general tips. I’m not sure why you’re being sarcastic but I truly hope you find time to relax today 🙂
