I can’t imagine a jurisdiction in which this wouldn’t be considered fraud. I’ve also been told that I have a limited imagination.

You should be sending an email to your client asking if you have permission to sign on their behalf. They need to confirm in writing

Yes I mean putting their signature
Definitely not without client’s express permission.
Do you have your client’s permission?
No, we don’t.
It’s your license at the end of the day so don’t do anything that you are concerned is an ethical violation. Your state bar should have an ethics hotline where you can call and ask questions. It may be worth it to ask them what you should do in this situation.

Not as long as you have the client's permission.
Even with the client’s permission, it’s at the very least a questionable practice, more so if the client has not read the pleading or if the pleading contains information not personally provided by the client. This practice, at least potentially, exposes the client to unsavory consequences (and the attorney to claims of malpractice as a result). Why not just ask the client to review and sign it??
