Are you a staff or still in residency?
It’s definitely part of the culture at some institutions more than others. Bullying has decreased significantly over the last 10 years thankfully. There is no place for it in medicine, training or otherwise.
Sounds like when I was a resident!
Try being a physician extender or nurse practitioner. I’ve only experienced really in a toxic larger urban Emergency Department.
I finished residency last year, and bullying definitely is still a thing.
I had an attending threaten to fail my rotation during residency for studying for step 3 in my free time instead of studying for her rotation. One of the biggest bullies I met and unfortunately everyone had an issue with that rotation and nothing was ever done.
Absolutely, bullying is a thing. One of the biggest names in emergency medicine bullied me for not showing proper deference
You have to wonder why successful people are still so secretly insecure. It is a sad state of affairs and likely something that could be mitigated with sweeping cultural education and reform. Likely starts with the perception of why someone is considered "valuable" amongst their peers.
Definitely exists in all careers. Seems particularly offensive in medicine or education, where the majority perceive themselves as altruistic. Just learn what type of professional you want to be - and who you do not want to be. Adjust location accordingly. Sometimes inconvenient, but always worth it.
