I am interviewing with a company and have heard from insiders (not the hiring team) that every new hire only receives “met targets” rating at year end (hiring team won’t confirm). As someone who tries to go the extra mile, I can’t understand why a company would deliberately restrict performance ratings in this manner. (I would always try to get an exceeds targets or exceptional rating in the past at my current employer and have been successful each time). Does this policy make any sense?

Numerous companies do this, they say this is meant to incentivize new hires to work even harder. I’m with you on this one, this policy makes no sense!

It's not uncommon. I find it highly demotivating. But it is definitely not uncommon.

As someone who just did their year end review as a first year, they told me they don’t like giving an exceeds the first year because then theirs no projected growth and “a perceived nothing to build on”

Very common.

Agree larger firms it very common. Only the few exceptional folks are allowed. Question- how did you mgr reflect his views on your review? Do ppl know that you go the extra mile? Have you documented your extra mile activity and had the conversation w your manager about it?

I haven’t accepted the offer 😂 and am on the fence about a team that deliberately holds back someone the first year they join and are the most excited to start contributing

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

Anyone have any idea when the hiring freeze might end within AWS ProServ? I’m currently at Amazon and have a TS clearance, PMP & CSM. I come from a Big4 consulting firm with a background in Enterprise Performance. I’ll be honest and say I’m not feeling very safe in my current role with the ongoing layoffs. Instead of leaving, I’d love to go back to my “consulting roots” and join the ProServ team. I’m taking my AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam next weekend. Hoping this freeze is lifted soon.

Meaning that their interview process is probably going to take longer... how should I reach out to the company and properly let them know my situation?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Recently, the CEO and my boss, the VP gave me the latitude to promote myself and "write my own" job description. I've been the Marketing Manager of this company for about 7 months. Already received 1 raise.

Much of the work in my "new" job description, I've already been doing. My currently salary is $70K. New title is Director of Communications and Systems Integration. What is a reasonable salary increase here.

I have about 7 years experience in this area.
