I am looking for ideas for a high school intervention class with students reading at PP-4th. I am a brand new teacher and have never taught intervention but we are extremely short staffed. I inherited the class mid-last semester and the former teacher had no framework whatsoever. I'm pulling grade level texts and trying to work on reading fluency and comprehension but don't feel like what I'm doing is effective, and the students are not very engaged. Any great resources I should check out?

There is a great free site called rewordify that you can put in text they are using in class and it simplifies it down to a lower reading level. Also look for for materials labeled as “high interest, low level” reading if you have any budget. (High Noon Books has a lot) they give lower level books with topics that aren’t babyish.

We use the web subscriptions to "Read Live!" and "Lexia Core 5." We also have a subscription to Mobymax, which has all four core subject areas. There is a free version of Mobymax available. For practicing math & ELA skills we use "www.ixl.com." If you are interested in print reading kits, I can let you know what we use. One more web subscription that I think has really good offerings is "Learning Upgrade."

Great suggestions! Have you ever tried using ArgoPrep? I hear about them from several of other colleges and they are happy. It looks like they provide eBooks for all subjects as well as online curriculum like video lectures. Quizzes etc.

I have found Commonlit, Read Theory, News ELA, and Flocabulary very helpful.

I use Phonics For Reading (knows consonant sounds through grade 2/3 level) and REWARDS (3rd grade level and up) with my 6th graders. 😊

Newsela has some great content articles and you can vary the level. CommonLit has resources as well. If you know what they are reading or topics they are learning in other classes, these are helpful. Both have free versions.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

View the demo for Achieve 3000 (Achieve3000.com). I used it for 4 years with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and saw TREMENDOUS growth.

Join all of the science of reading pages-there is one for 3rd grade and beyond.

I am currently one of two reading teachers at the high school I work in and three in the district, which consists of two high schools. I think I would be more effective, and it would would a) make more of a difference and b) be more enjoyable teaching at a k-6 school. I have an MA in reading K-12 so as long as it’s reading, I can teach at an elementary school. I tutor after school from my house for kids in the younger grades. The 2nd grader I’m currently tutoring went from an F to an A- in just

We have a large unused professional library that includes a variety of authors, topics, and lots of the scholastic teaching resource books. Most are more than 5 years old, some much older. Some multiple copies of titles that were book studies over the years. No one is using these books and we need the space. I hate to just dump them in a trash bin. After setting them out for people to pick through at school, what can be done with these materials?
