How do you determine which students will be on your caseload?

We are required by the state to use a screener on all of our K-3 students. We use STAR by Renaissance. All of those who score at-risk have plans written for them. I rank-order the students according to those tests and get teacher-input on whom I serve. I can’t possibly work with everyone who scores “at-risk”.

I had way too many kids I was trying to work with last year. I had 16 1st graders alone. I was only able to see them twice a week. I had at least that many or more each in 2nd and 3rd. I won’t do that next year. The best advice I can give is to keep your caseload numbers down like you have them now. I think I would do more good by seeing fewer students more often. I’d like to be able to move more students off of the plan and work my way down the rank order list.

We look at their standardized tests and also chat with their prior year teachers to determine the need for parent permission to screen them ( grades 3 and above ). The youngers, we look at classroom performance, DIBELS scores and also teacher referrals

We look at testing data to prioritize, then meet with teachers to get their impressions. We test all kids coming in before school starts when they come in to meet their teachers.

Currently a staff in audit - 6 months in. Glad to be learning a lot, and have had a generally positive experience at the firm other than a few interactions, some tough busy season nights. Really been intrigued by TAS/M&A, however, and had a few convos with a senior in TAS i know at the firm. It’s closer to what I studied, but don’t know how to make the jump as it seems an internal transfer could take 6+months/senior rank and a lot of convincing. Is it better to jump firms/has anyone done this?

I graduated last year with a master’s in reading education. I was looking forward to getting hired as a reading specialist/literacy coach. However, I was just offered a job as a math coach. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I know a lot of reading strategies can be applied in math, but I’m feeling a bit indecisive about accepting the position. Some advice would be helpful. Thanks!

5th grade ELA teacher in search of novel ideas and resources .

I am looking for ideas for a high school intervention class with students reading at PP-4th. I am a brand new teacher and have never taught intervention but we are extremely short staffed. I inherited the class mid-last semester and the former teacher had no framework whatsoever. I'm pulling grade level texts and trying to work on reading fluency and comprehension but don't feel like what I'm doing is effective, and the students are not very engaged. Any great resources I should check out?

We have a large unused professional library that includes a variety of authors, topics, and lots of the scholastic teaching resource books. Most are more than 5 years old, some much older. Some multiple copies of titles that were book studies over the years. No one is using these books and we need the space. I hate to just dump them in a trash bin. After setting them out for people to pick through at school, what can be done with these materials?

I am currently one of two reading teachers at the high school I work in and three in the district, which consists of two high schools. I think I would be more effective, and it would would a) make more of a difference and b) be more enjoyable teaching at a k-6 school. I have an MA in reading K-12 so as long as it’s reading, I can teach at an elementary school. I tutor after school from my house for kids in the younger grades.
