Honestly, there are a number of terms that you can mix and match. It is a bit difficult working in supply chain due to inflation and the ongoing disruptions but you should definitely pursue it if it’s something you are interested in. I think showcasing your ability to problem-solve and think quickly on your feet are good qualities to exhibit in order to be competitive.
I very recently pivoted out of supply chain into finance, but during my time there were a lot of unprecedented issues cropping up. In addition to the “normal” issues that supply workers would deal with, now they have fires that they need to put out daily.
Inflation: inflation is pushing suppliers to push back and threaten to stop shipping their products if they don’t receive new contracts with higher prices. I’m sure this has only gotten worse with the Russia situation pushing inflation to higher levels. Obviously your company will not have the budget or want to to approve paying higher prices for the products they purchase so this puts supply chain workers in a tough position. This has created friction between suppliers and buyers of their products. I feel like this problem is more applicable to purchasing/procurement since buyers (in my experience) have total control over the contracts and negotiations.
Other disruptions: the onset of COVID have left gaps in the labor market. This has a a range of implications, from manufacturing laborers to delivery drivers. And it’s not just that companies are having trouble maintaining their labor force, but some countries have even imposed legal capacity restrictions on their plants/factories (which may have been lifted since I left supply chain). The global port delays are also another factor in this, since companies were (and may still be) having trouble getting shipping containers and then also finding workers to actually deliver those containers. Also China tariffs and microchip did impact my particular industry. Basically, there are several issues impacting the supply chain overall.
Lastly, I want to note that everyone has different experiences in different industries within the field of supply chain so don’t let this completely deter you if this is the industry you want. It isn’t always like this. I would advise you do your own research by googling “supply chain disruptions 2022” (which discuss when the issues are projected to iron themselves out) if this is something that you’re concerned about. In the end, I think any job is going to be stressful so you’ve just gotta choose the job you are going to be stressed about if that makes sense haha
