I am on partnership track and have been having convos with partners about BD targets. One partner has been receptive and can help make intros to my targets. Another who I work with more said you need to service clients, they can then grow the department and the case will come. With latter partner's comments, I am considering the capability of the partners to do that. I don't think it's there. Is it reasonable to assess their ability to do so in deciding whether this firm is the right for me?

Why not do both? IME, the most successful partners have been the ones that both nurture their existing relationships with quality work AND spend time finding new ones. The legacy work keeps them busy enough to stay afloat and the occasional success on new relationships is what creates the growth to push them ahead of their peers in terms of originations.

This is a really smart and important question, because at many/most firms these days, the “business case” for advancement depends heavily on the prospect that a potential partner will develop business sufficient to support themselves and ideally others. At the firms that I practiced with, service partner was a fairly tough route to partnership, although I do know some people who have done it successfully over a sustained. It really depends on the nature of the client, your role with the client, how the firm spreads credit for origination of matters that come from established client, relationships, and whether those things are susceptible to change over the foreseeable future. When I was in your place, I was much more focused on figuring out how to develop my own client, relationships, which didn’t depend on firm policy, and were portable if I decided that the firm no longer fit me or my practice. If your question is which path you should emphasize, I would strongly encourage the independent practice path. It’s harder to achieve, but having your own clients and reputation provides very significant leverage and compensation, discussions, and more importantly, the freedom of knowing that the firm could fall out from under you tomorrow and you would be just fine after you moved your clients to a new home.

For context - I think partners won't hand you partnership for the work and they will want to keep relationships themselves unless they are overwhelmed and relationships / delivery is failing. I need to originate myself. There is a bit of a disconnect on what the expectation is. Partners in my team are reasonable at origination and technically v good, but imo don't have the creativity to grow the practice and from what I have seen, the ability to maintain relationships for more than 4-5 years.

Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?
