I am on partnership track. However a few partners I work with started to act kind of cold lately. It is hard to put it on words. But this is getting harder as it hurts my feelings. I sort of feel left alone. It is like I am in a war to get what I want. Has anyone gone through similar experience during their partnership track? Any suggestions?

How is the firm doing generally? Are they super busy? IME, this stuff generally has little to do with you, they think “senior associate over there is doing just fine with minimal supervision, let me focus on the 15 deals I have blowing up, my wife who’s trying to divorce me, my kids who hate me, my new found passion for ASMR videos on YouTube, my unvaxxed sister in law who’s insisting on coming to visit, the midlevel associate who needs confirmation on every little thing etc.” Maybe helpful to set up a check in call or something if you’re feeling out of touch.

Doesn’t just apply to this situation, but when I encounter people that are cold or rude, I always try to take the perspective of that sucks for them and frankly, I feel bad for them. Going through life with that sort of behavior can’t feel good. I also try to take the perspective of you don’t really know what’s going on in a person’s life so I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt in terms of why they may be acting a certain way. Now, that may sound like I am making an excuse for them (and maybe I am a little) but it really helps me not get to bothered by the poor behavior of others. I also balance these perspectives with a little chip on my shoulder attitude. I wont be denied what I think I deserve based on my hard work, which in the case for you is partnership. Lastly, I’ve discovered that a big part of lawyering is trying to deal with the stress of it in a manageable and healthy way. I actively try to take a big picture approach when it comes to determining what to stress about. Really don’t sweat the small stuff, you won’t have the capacity in the long term. I like to think this sort of approach has helped me in my short career thus far.

Is it possible that they want to push you towards more independence in leading your matters? I think i know what you mean because around the start of year 6 i suddenly realized that I’m getting a lot less support / supervision than even a few months prior

like

Well it is not about support actually. It is lack of basic human interraction. I already handle matters alone with minimum or non support.

Is it possible that they are supporting other candidates and feel guilty about it?

No idea…

If you play sturm und drang you’ll destroy your psyche. They want you as P or they don’t. If work is still coming your way but you’re getting fewer warm fuzzies, it may be as simple as - we are exhausted in our 20th month of covid and there are squeakier wheels that need our attention, like the 2-5 year associates who are dying with no light to motivate them.

Fwiw, i was in your same existential mindset three weeks ago and will be again several more times before the big reveal.

It’s hard to know what it means. It could have absolutely nothing to do with you. Have other associates noticed it as well?

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!

Received an offer to lateral to a Big Law firm in my current state. Kind of my dream job. Recently decided with my spouse that we’ve had more than enough of our current state and we want to move out of state next year. There’s no local office for this firm where we’re going, and no idea if remote would be an option. Conflicted on whether it’s fair to take the position, although I really want it. Thoughts?

I’ve been running into weird happenings at my new firm learn of everything “I misunderstood” about my package. I don’t actually qualify for quarterly bonuses at a pro-rated billing rate; no 401ks till year 2; and the biggest—we don’t qualify for a raise unless we are here during the entire fiscal year. We have a 2100 billable req which I’m barely hitting. We also get paid below 6 figures. I learned that the new associates came is at least $10k over us. I graduated 2020–but 1st firm job. Advice?
