A lot can happen in a year, I'd take the role and see where things end up in a year. I assume moving to another state depends on both you and your partner finding new jobs in the next state first, might as well get some experience that will make looking for the next role easier.

Fair to whom? The firm can deal with it, you’re going to be there at least a year and work hard while you’re there. I definitely would not count on them letting you work remote from somewhere they don’t have an office, if you take it, expect to be back on the job hunt next summer.
Fair to your spouse? Probably not, if you previously indicated you’re happy to move and spouse is counting on that and you’re re-thinking move, but that’s something you guys need to discuss and work out.
Do you have prior short stints on your resume? 1 year is fine, but a year there and a year here isn’t great. Not a career ender though when you’re making moves for good reasons (upward lateral move, moving to new city with spouse).
Why is this a dream job? Are there similar jobs in the new place you want to move to? Can you start applying to those now? My point being, when you can get one biglaw offer you can usually get more than one - market is hot right now but that may not have been the case for you a year or two ago and may not be the case a year or two from now.
However, best way to get your next biglaw job (if that’s your goal) is by already having biglaw on your resume. Having biglaw on your resume will also help at your new state’s midsize regional firms and/or boutiques.
Don’t overthink this one. Take the job.
If it’s your dream job, you can postpone the plans for moving out of state, right?
I think our dissatisfaction with current state outweighs the fact of this being a dream job. We’re pretty set on moving back home summer of 2022.
Thanks for this. This is really insightful. Fair to the new firm really. I just feel bad going to a new firm knowing I plan to leave in a year. I’ve been with my current firm for 4 years (boutique), but this position puts me on the trajectory I want career wise, just not in my current state. Had 2 1-year stints prior to my current firm in less than ideal positions. The spouse and I are definitely on the same page with the move.
I have applied to other large firms in the state where we’re headed, but haven’t gotten a bite, but won’t be in a position to move before the end of year in any case.
