I am shocked with how much unpaid work is expected now just to get a job. I completed 2 design exercises that each took several hours and none led to offers. But there's no way to say no and keep your name in the running. Anyone else feel like this is becoming unreasonable?

Are there ways to showcase skills without spending hours on unpaid work? This is becoming the norm, and I’m not sure what to do. I can’t spend that much time constantly getting rejected.

I once took a home assessment that consumes 40 hours of my week, after submitting it, interviews, and reviews looked promising, until the HR went cold on me.

I vowed never to do any take home assignments, anything that will use up more than 8 hours, I will let go.

I agree but what can I do? If I get an opportunity to interview I might be only competing with <10 people. People are desperate if I don’t take the exercises seriously than I will for sure not get the job. It’s an employers market right now.

I used to be bold and either outright refuse, or let them know my hourly rate for consultancy work. It's so different now. Opportunities are scarce and employers are taking full advantage of the situation. I have no choice but to put in the hours.

I agree it has crossed into unreasonable. I now set limits upfront. One exercise is acceptable. Multiple unpaid rounds signal how little time they will respect once hired.

Completely agree. I spent 3 days preparing a business case. For a credit union in McLean regarding ding a technology they were planning to deploy. After a great session, I was ghosted. I am sure the hiring team will use the business case for their work. It has been one unprofessional. After that we outright say no specially to recruiters who want to want you to go above and beyond to improve your chances.

Hill I'm going to die on:

Hiring managers and interviewers are aware of this, most agree with OP, and can definitely do something to stop it.

But they won't.

As of late, my work related anxiety has reached new levels and it’s really starting to affect me mentally. I’m part of a great team; I’m trusted and supported, have a great track record, there are no issues, and have been no incidents. Regardless, my professional self perception and confidence is so rattled as of late, it’s almost like a paralysis at times. I realize there are much larger problems right now, but if anyone has any tips or advice to get over this, I am all ears. Thanks all!

Looked it up and it seems to be a new “Techsurance” company working with both home and auto policies. Does anyone have any information they could share about this company? Thank you!

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

I have an offer to do some consulting for a company based out of the UK (I am in the US). The job would not go through a consulting company but would be directly with the company. I have not done any consulting before so I am not sure how it works, what I would need to set up (they mentioned that I would start a LLC and bill them directly, no idea how to do that), how to determine the tax implications of this, or what hourly rate I would expect. Can anyone offer advice?

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?
