Get an outside offer. Use it to tie their hands and be ready to take the offer if they refuse
I think you're gonna find that this is the top advice for the most part, but my big thing would be - be ready to walk if they don't counter. I think it's all well and good to have something else on the table, but if they're not gonna match it...then what?
I know this sucks but try getting all your achievements in the past 5 years and present them. I hate that some companies don't match the inflation; you are losing money every year you keep working for them.
What the other person said I’d leave. Most likely you’ll get an offer a lot higher with your experience.
Do you make commissions? If so, are you consistently hitting your numbers?
^ Currently doing this now. The moment that you show that you are willing to go somewhere else for a better offer, you’re banking on being an asset that they cannot lose. Best of luck!
Here is what i am thinking if i want to have such a discussion with my boss.
- do research for similar exp role and its pay to discuss what other companies are paying similar roles.
- have your numbers such as growth on yty basis, your key wins, your future prospects etc. To show your value to the company.
- in summary leverage your experience, loyalty, market norm salary scale and ultimately your value as an employee.
Worthy to try this way first and that way you dont want to search for new job and putting yourself out of focus.
I recently went through this. My approach was successful. I said “I’m regularly approached on LinkedIn with offers of $xxx,xxx.xx. Help me drowned out the noise”
I like my boss, client, company, etc. but the opportunity cost of staying here is too high.
