I am struggling to find ideas of what to do with my 8th grade newcomers during virtual instruction. We are supposed to being doing "the same thing as everyone else" but it is an overwhelming amount of text/writing to require of students who have LEP and have limited-technology-proficiency as well.
I have only taught ESL one year, and it was with developing/expanding students.
I am looking for inspiration, ideas, examples! Please help.

If they have devices/connections- use Pear Deck to engage them while presenting new info. eSL library has also been awesome - plenty of topics and the ability to be printed, presented and completed individually.

Nearpod has some great virtual field trips, too!

Also show them how to use Google Translate to make assignments accessible in their home language. Then they can do more of what their classmates are doing.

like

Use videos and pictures to give them the background information. Then use graphic organizers to help them with the writing. My students who are fluent in their home language are allowed to write in that language. They usually use Google Translate to translate to English for the teacher.

What platform do you all use? Perhaps turning on CC would help them focus on what's being said.

Chunking! Chunking is your friend!

Have you tried the Bridges Program ?

Learn how to use Near pod for interactive lessons also Brain POP ELL has a lot of stuff and you can keep track of student progress and work.

Telco PMs, how do you call that type of project in which you manage the End-To-End deployment? I mean from planning the electric connections for a servers rack, engineering the network, the cabling and devices installation, setting up the link (and everything in between)?

English is not my first language and I'm having trouble coming up with what we call "Llave en Mano" in Spanish... or is it just End-To-End? My mind is fried and is only Wednesday.

Thanks!

A parent of one of my students told admin she thinks it's irresponsible that I won't be grading over Christmas break. I let the students know to get any work they need graded in before the break and I'll get it to it during our workdays in January. Apparently that's not fast enough for her 🙄. Is it wrong that I'm sort of pissed off by this? Should I say something?
