I feel like i’m working so incredibly hard but nothing i’ve ever done has impressed my leadership or won an award. What can I be doing differently to be more successful?

Make things YOU think is cool. Dont focus on impressing others but yourself. The rest will follow.

Hard work is typically only appreciated if it comes along with good work. If your bosses don’t like your work, ask for feedback on what you can be doing differently.

But also—maybe your CDs/leadership just don’t have the same taste as you. A bad idea to one person can be a great idea to another. Try to find people in your agency or elsewhere who have the same taste as you and try to work with them.

Brand works rarely wins awards, let alone the day to day. If you’re not getting chances to work on bigger projects, create your own opportunities. Bring the team big ideas for your clients. Come up with a pro bono project around something you’re passionate about. Be vocal about the type of work you want to be involved in.

Some people have to paddle a lot harder to keep up with average. The real question you need to ask yourself is whether this job suits your nature and talents. If you’re working really hard and the output isn’t wowing anyone, could be a sign you’re not as great as you’d like to be. Is it possible to improve? What steps are necessary? Or are you simply not cut out for this type of work?

The other possibility is that you’re good, but your leadership is misguided and political and it’s not really about talent, but relationships and optics. In which case, it’s best to work somewhere else.

But be honest with yourself. And read Ray Dalio.

If the boat in this metaphor is your creative ability, I’d counter it’s as much about the river they throw you in.

If your agency is putting you on the shit account nobody wants it’s hard to do good work especially if you’re not the cd truly steering

This is my whole career in a nutshell and while I think it’s sometimes helpful to point the finger at yourself, the truth is that a lot of other factors will make it seem like you suck even if you don’t. If you’re only getting handed briefs from clients that (for example) have a ton of disclaimers and no risk appetite don’t be surprised when all the work you produce is just meh. If you can’t be occasionally moved to another account to work on cool things / see if you’re the problem then you need to switch agencies.

Ironically, I am impressing lots of folks, and I don't love the work I’m doing. The grass is always greener.

change agencies p

I feel this to my core!!!!

Switching from commission to salary!

I’m considering a less sales-oriented role that doesn’t pay commission. The new role will have a higher base but lower overall earning potential.

What % haircut should be expected? As an example, if I make 100k (base + commission) today, would it be realistic to ask for 90k (10% cut) + equity to make up the difference?

Already spoke with a partner who wanted something done this morning for him to review and then we discuss again. Sent it to him about 4 hours ago. Should take him half an hour to review max. At what point can I check in with him to see when we can catch up so I’m not waiting in the office all day?

What’s your take on a job listing that states “From $xx,xxx”

The particular job I’m looking at has this on the listing and I’m curious as to what their budget actually is. Do I assume a range?

They’re seeking someone with 5-8 years experience. I have the latter (8 almost 9)

How would I approach this when asked without pricing myself out of the position? Especially if they’re not willing to be upfront (assuming here) how much they’d want to offer me in particular.

I have an associate's degree in graphic design and work designing wedding stationery. I've been at my company since 2016, and am now a design consultant - speaking to customers directly and creating custom artwork and designs for them. I know I'm underpaid (50k/year in the SF Bay Area) but I thought the benefits and stability were worth it. I'm now severely burnt out (most of my team is) and not sure which way to go, or how to grow. Any tips/advice?

Thanks!
