I found out I’m the highest ranked senior associate in my entire office for this year-end process. Advice on how to incorporate this into your compensation talks. I am hearing that new hires are making 8k-12k more than me. I don’t want more than them, I want parity with my peers.

Confession : the I don’t want more than them portion is a lie. Lower performers being paid more than me grinds my gear a little bit.

You can't really reference other people's salaries, so try explaining why your performance should translate into quicker progression within the pay band above the average progression (ie., you should be above middle of range if the avg person of your YOE sits in middle etc)

No I said it is relevant, not that someone should confront their employer and use their coworkers salary as the reason for the raise. Coworkers are allowed to discuss their salaries with one another. It’s confidential in the sense your employer can’t share someone else’s salary with you, not in the sense that you’re not allowed to know what someone else’s salary is.

That also isn’t how I would frame it. My market value isn’t based only on my skillset. It’s based on the market and the other people competing against my skillset. So while I wouldn’t say, Sally sucks a lot makes $20k more than me and that isn’t fair give me a raise, I would say in comparing my contributions and salary against the market, including my coworkers, I think I am being paid less than my market value and should be paid $x. Sally sucks a lots salary is relevant because it is a specific dollar amount to measure myself against. If the firm thinks Sally is worth $100k, and I contribute 20% more economic value than her, I have an estimate for what my value actually is to the company.

I’m a senior manager. I’ve used this in negotiation for myself and seen peer salaries used as a relevant metric in salary negotiations successfully many times. The approach you suggest won’t work. The approach I suggested can work.

Wow, your ranks have ranks ?

^ I think most firms follow a similar process ^

Depending on your firm the likelihood of negotiating your new salary is low. Im at KPMG and merit increases are what they are - non-negotiable.

I was in a similar situation back when I was a Manager. Had highest utilization for 2 years in a row and consistently ranked above my peers. While it made my promotion case easier, it did nothing for my merit increases which were similar/slightly higher than peers in my geographic area.

Doesn’t have to be high-paying, as long as it can support my life (single) and long-term medical cost. Thanks in advance.
