Not really. I've been transparent about having other offers on the table when asked, but I haven't flat out said "match this $ amount or I'm out." Probably a mistake on my part, I just can't bring myself to do it.
You need to be tactful and calculated. You want to make sure you’re doing it with the firm you wish to join, and you need to be transparent.
“Hi firm A, thank you so much for sending me the offer to review. During this time I also received an offer from another firm I interviewed with, however I’m very excited to work with you. - Is this offer negotiable?”
Now don’t say anything until they respond. This is the window where you leverage the other offer, and ask for them to match it. They may ask to see an offer letter (not always) - but be prepared should they request it.
Now you want to avoid much more back and forth, you want to negotiate before you sign the offer - ideally and make sure you focus more on the job and company than the money. And you should be able to successfully get what you’re looking for.
I agree with Senior HR Generalist 1, it has to be timed well and calculated in advance. You don't want to end up burning two bridges. I don't blame you for taking an offer to leave a job you wanted to get out of.
It usually goes well
