As someone who studied Graphic Design at uni, I honestly think one of the biggest challenges is that design is such a broad subject. To really build a strong portfolio and become employable, you usually need to dig deep into a specific area rather than trying to do everything at once.
That could be print design, branding, logo design, UX/UI, digital design, editorial/book design, packaging, motion, etc. The ‘jack of all trades’ approach can sometimes backfire as hiring managers find it difficult to understand where you fit or what role you’d be strongest in.
A focused portfolio tends to make a much stronger impression because it shows clear direction and expertise. Once you establish yourself in one area, it becomes much easier to branch out creatively later on.
Getting a job in a creative field is 100% about your portfolio. If it’s not really really good, it’ll be really really hard to find a job.
I have a portfolio. I feel like it’s good but I am biased because it’s my own work. I bet it can use a lot of work though
