I had a customer call me out of my name because he wasn’t an authorized user on an account he wanted to add two very expensive items on. Which the process causes for a soft pull on the primary account holder’s credit when adding new lines to the account. I explained that he got upset and called me out of my name. The best part of this story is he recently revisited our store and applied for his own account and was denied!
Have you ever experienced a customer calling you out of your name?

What does "called me out of my name" mean?

like

For example you’re helping someone they get upset calls you a derogatory word anything other than your name

I’ve had that happen on occasion, somebody using some rather impolite terms to address me. It always kind of amuses me, because how is that helping the situation at all? I also think people do it because they know we are supposed to remain nice and professional.

That is awesome to hear about your GM. People like that make it a lot easier to work these jobs. The “killing them with kindness” is almost always the best route!

Do you mean "call you out by name" as in go to your boss and say "PERSON is rude and super unhelpful, you should fire them!"? Because if so, yes, this happens all the time. It's most customers' favorite threat.

No I mean like calling you a derogatory name and not your own

Yep, and it’s never fun. But hearing he got denied later? That’s some sweet poetic justice.

Am I overreacting thinking this is a major slight that will ultimately slow down my growth within the company?

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.
