So let me get this straight. McK is paying you a strategy salary with only a 25% utilization target? What is an org initiative? Are you sure you’re reading the room correctly?
If you enjoy the internal initiatives, there may be an opportunity to transition to a role in an internal function. Those roles tend not to have as much prestige or as rapid a career trajectory as consulting roles (and depending on the role, you might have to take a pay cut), but it sounds like they are more aligned to your interests.
From what I understand, MBB don’t view utilization as an individual performance metric the way the Big 4 do, but 25% utilization is still not sustainable over any kind of long term horizon in consulting.
I, too, prefer “work” over Work.
Oooh, idk about that. Keeping one foot in the door of client facing projects is essential, imo.
Somebody doing only internal ops/admin at McKinsey doesn't have nearly the same sway as the actual client work
Seems this decision will be made for you in the next performance cycle if not sooner.
Org initiatives = Capacity reduction = RIFs ?
Sounds like practice building and internal initiatives in this case
You need to look at the writing on the wall. You like business/process improvement + operations. Take an external offer doing strategy and ops at a tech company or start up and align yourself with a specific vertical once you feel comfortable. You’ll be a lot more happy and be able to have two feet on one side of the fence. People pick up on you being distracted at some point.
