I have 5+ years of management mostly in big box like office depot/office max. Recently I was told I'm not ready to be a store manager. Which is crazy seeing that I am helping my current store manager learn how to be a store manager aka my boss. I don't understand how I'm not ready.

Your current manager doesnt like you or is trying to keep you right where you are since ypur supporting them

Prove them wrong! Keep pushing you got this! Did you ask them what they felt you were lacking so you can get to your next step? It could be that you can do the logistics but need to grow in service or something they are looking for. I always asked for honest feedback so I could grow. If they can’t give that to you then maybe you need to go somewhere else where they can!

Ask them what the qualifications of store manager are so you have a clear idea of what you have to do to be ready.

You are interviewing for your next promotion every time you interact with the people who will decide who they promote next. It's sometimes the intangible qualities that they seek not technical as they can teach anyone the job, but leadership and how you present yourself is paramount

like

It’s called politics. They promote their buddies 99% of the time or someone they like but isn’t qualified! I was an Assistant Manager at Walmart for 13 years. Trained some of my own supervisors and had multiple people promoted from under me due to their performance development under me. After 13 years I left a job that only wanted me to stay in the same position but continue training other managers how to do their job with no promotion or compensation. Best move I ever made!!

How long have you been with the company? You definitely sound qualified for the job, so the only thing I can think of is that this has to do with some company policy regarding tenure. Maybe they only promote to manager after X amount of time working as an assistant manager, regardless of your experience elsewhere.

Yep, some companies require x amount of experience before the next steps. But if the candidate is ready for the role that needs to be filled, why wait?

I wouldn’t take it to heart. A statement like that is very subjective and one leader may not share the same opinion that other leaders do.

Go to Burlington web site. They promote well. Opening new stores all the time also

A number if companies are digging in and keeping personnel costs down. Inflation is up and the fiscally conservative, conscientious employees are just concerned about hanging in there & paying their bills. Quitting a decent reliable job right now seems ill-advised, and the top is riding that wave. Our office manager was literally told by someone from the home office not to grade performance above a certain threshold to preclude any requests for merit pay raises. Associates at our location havent received a raise in 2+ years. I was apologetically told I was ranked "the highest above average in the store." I'm a senior citizen and also retired military, so I took it more personally than some others did- But raises aren't just about money; they are also a tangible message about our value to the company. So don't feel badly and believe that you are somehow lacking. It's highly possible you are not. The decision to move on or stay is yours. Good luck!

I worked in retail 20 years. My suggestion is get out and find a job outside of retail. Like others have said find another job first, do not just up and quit out of the blue. The company I worked for would constantly hire who kissed the most ass and the undeserving like outside hires with no experience at all, that I would have to help train do the job I was not qualified for or needed more "experience" If you are being told that they have no intention of ever promoting you. I got an office job work less hours, make the same amount of money and I'm home every night at the same time and can actually see my family, also I'm off the weekends and holidays. You will not miss dealing with customers either.

I have 30 years and they say I'm not qualified.

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

Is it just me or with the rise of attacks on "essential workers", it's scary nowadays to work a public-facing job? I've seen so many videos of workers getting attacked for doing their job, some of them have even lost their lives.

Moving on from Hotels (Hospitality)?

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now, but it is very to commit to actually accept a new job offer since I really do love my job. My only complaint is, the pay vs workload is very small. I’m a manager now and my property offered me a director position… but the salary is still low! To make six figures, it’ll take another 5-6 years to grind it out.

Should I move on and go to a different industry? Opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Clopening is sooo draining, I can’t believe it’s legal to make people do that. Seriously, can we not make laws about this stuff?

For all you retail people...are you experiencing a very slow holiday season? I am a retail manager and I feel like this season has been freakishly slow. I thought we would at least match last year's number or be up a little bit but we are trending down. I talked to employees of other stores in the mall and they are saying the same thing. Is anyone else experiencing this in their market?
