If this is what you want (a foot in the door) to gain experience, go for it 🫶🏾
This x10
56k for no experience ain’t bad if you’ll only be working 40 hours
^I don’t think asking about average hours/if there is a busy season hours expectation is a bad thing, but most public accounting jobs you’ll end up working 40 as a minimum. When you’re not staffed take advantage is what I’ve heard from my auditor friends (my LOB has no busy season but consistently work over 40 hours).
Do this. Don’t push back at all.
If your goal is to grow, leverage this time to try and take your CPA. If they are thinking about dropping the schooling for experience, you will want this.
I worked at a national firm back when I had my 120, attended classes at night to get my 150, took the cpa then moved up to senior manager at a national firm.

Do this for a year, open the door to exits and higher comp. Fwiw I started with bs in accounting at a random company, still no cpa, and making plenty of $$.
The industry is contemplating getting rid of the 150 hour limit. Focus on taking the exam.
Omg, I’m literally on the same boat as you 😭 I didn’t do an internship and after 10 months of looking for a job, I was just offered a position as a staff accountant despite my lack of experience.
Yes, I won’t lie. I couldn’t present a counter offer just based off the fact that I had no prior experience whatsoever, but other accountants at the company had the same problem coming in. They just told me it’s a matter of growing within the company
Currently have 127 credits so I would definitely have to go back and get a masters or take some undergrad classes to meet the 150.
Would it be unusual to ask the company to pay for school? How would I even go about this conversation?
This would probably be an established benefit if so. If the firm is small, I would be doubtful.
56 is exactly what I made at a middle market firm ~5 years ago.
I would say that’s not bad for a small firm. Get some experience and apply elsewhere if you don’t like it.
What’s going on here are you eligible in your state to take the cpa exam ?
Or does the CMA , CIA or grad school program interest you ?
I think for the sake of your career we need to be doing more than just working 40 hour staff accountant type role
