Longer you stay the harder it'll get. Just have to get started. Start as an analyst like we all did and work your way up, even if it's an initial paycut. 10 years in I'm about to go 5x my starting analyst salary. I don't think you'll see the same long term growth in auto sales. Good luck.
We had a guy come work with us from auto sales for almost 2 years before washing out. His 3 key mistakes were:
1. He went straight to being a Financial Advisor without being a junior or analyst or something where he could learn it more first.
2. He struggled with the marketing piece... clients don't just walk into your office randomly looking to buy a product they saw online. You need to actively prospect. In car sales the ads drive the customers to your door, but as an FA advertising gets your name out there so they know who you are when you contact them.
3. He did not fully grasp the difference between a customer and a client. As a result his clients felt like they did not get enough attention, because he treated them like customers.
You have to make a move! You can find a hundred and one excuses for not leaving the job, but the important thing is to do it and then figure it out. Good luck!
Being in sales has a lot of transferable skills! Focus on how your results in interviews and nail down your elevator pitch!
Here is a golden advice: had a friend who used to work at a dealer, then he switched to finance. One year later, there was a new job opening at our firm and they were looking for someone to manage rental cars for the firm. He applied and got the job plus %65 salary jump. So, instead of deciding which one to choose, find one that you can apply your both skills. I know it's rare but once you find it, you're chance are higher than everyone else. Good luck!
How about getting a career coach? I had one before and it really helped me determine what I really wanted and how to do it. You can find some on LinkedIn.
Hello! Working in sales comes with an advantage also. So many skills you learned there can be used in Finance. Go get it!
