Me too
I am almost the same person. I always topped in analytics and Math. I was a goto person in my school and colleges. But I am someone who doesn't know how to speak much and influence people. I always feel software industry is not meant for me. I don't know how to handle politics and how to impress managers. I accept all the junk work given to me and have always been doing that. Now there are freshers who knows things better than I do, because I have not been getting quality work. Maybe because I am unable to enjoy my work here, I do forget the things, do silly mistakes sometimes.
The responses to your query will be helpful for me as well.

Large orgs are probably not a fit for your friend. He's likely a better fit at smaller startups (although maybe not, based on what you describe), as an individual consultant, or in academia.
Harsh reality is that beyond a certain age most people can make minor deviations in their personality/work ethic: after that, the only way to be happy is to (1) be true to yourself, (2) accept your limitations, and (3) define success based on your metrics, not others.
That friend is you
