I have a good friend who interviewed someone to directly report to him, was hired, and then HR sent out an offer letter detailing a salary higher than what he makes. He talked to his boss and said they will review his title and salary at the April performance review. I told him he needs to update his resume and start applying yesterday. Do you agree? Have you ever seen a similar situation and it get resolved with everyone staying at the company?

I think he can work within the company to resolve the issue. It could've been an oversight and he could get a good promotion or pay raise out of it. They might also do backpay. If they don't, I would encourage him to look elsewhere.

I have seen situations where managers who manage their department’s payroll realize some of their subordinates make more than them.

This was rectified by a pay bump, and vacation time. And also, more scaling in the department: technician 3 role creation, lead role created, etc.

Exactly. Needs to be rectified once it’s noticed!

That happened to me. I was an office manager making 45k was promoted and was then interviewing for the new office manager who I would now supervise. The candidate I chose had average skills and good attitude, good references and we were desperate for help. I figured I could train her on the job. Later found out she was offered 10k more than I was making. Although I was handling more tasks than she was hired to do. When I addressed this my Director I was told the new salary was set by HR not them. I still don’t believe that.

I do agree with that. Waiting for a review months from now isn’t enough to fix this situation. That is assuming it even goes in their favor when April finally rolls around.

Sounds like in April there will be a layoff

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
