I have a temp contractor with 3x my yoe I'm supposed to be the lead for. He doesn't seem to understand what I'm asking him to do. I broke it down to the level of "this file, these functions, these arguments and this return type" and he still managed to get lost. How can I get him going in the right direction? I'm tempted to suggest we try some pair programming, but I'm worried it'd be faster just to implement the required changes myself. Even then, I've got my own work to do.

The point of contractors is if they arent doing the work properly you can get rid of them, so thats what I would suggest. My answer would be different for an employee.

Doing it yourself doesn’t help them, but the fact that they are temporary does make this a bit harder. Is this outside of what they said they could do? I have had people come in claiming to be proficient, but the work they do showed a very different story.

Must be my former coworker! 🤭

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.

Which is the more lucrative and flexible long term career path when comparing .NET development vs salesforce development.

By flexible I mean in terms of moving between positions, companies and technologies.

I've done both and am currently doing salesforce development but don't want to get pigeonholed.
