I have 100, with most being motor vehicle. A lot of them are really basic. 40 seems pretty low unless they are labor law/product liability types of cases

SA1: how much do these attorneys switch 50-60 open files bill on each file on average and in total per year to you?
I am in the mid 50s but I have construction defect and extremely minimal support staff. It’s a challenge and I’m not keeping up like I would be able to if we were staffed appropriately.
Insurance defense can be a beast depending on the cases you’re handling. At my firm, they try to keep us under 30 each because the responsibilities are a lot. I would make sure to have weekly meetings with your team that supports you on your cases so you can stay abreast of priorities and deadlines. If it’s still too much, perhaps meet with your partner to discuss.
If there’s other attorneys that can take on the load, I’d follow up with the partner to get a time frame on those transfers. I think it’s important to keep communication open and set expectations so there’s no confusion later down the road.
I have 30, I can’t imagine handling too many more without sacrificing quality and attention to detail. (And we’re hiring, if you’re in NYC!)
Former prosecutor here as well. Now 3 years in to med mal defense and have found that I’m pushing my limit when I get above 30 cases. Granted, med mal tends to have multiple defendants with 2-3 expert witnesses on average per side. My cases are also usually discovery heavy.
Medical malpractice is a different animal. You need a smaller docket to litigate well.
Do you have a paralegal and legal assistant. I have about 40 cases as well but I am managing it well because of my great support staff.
My assistant is okay but she messes up a LOT. I don't really have a paralegal. He's a law student but not proactive.
I'm on the plaintiff side but I currently have 130 active lit files and am drowning
I know the feeling. Could it be because there is a lack of communication/disconnect among the staff? Is everyone pulling their load and working as a team?
A4 exactly! And there's no end in sight. Now, my managing partner has been all over me because apparently my assistant is apparently not pulling her load. I get the sense they're going to axe her soon. Others apparently have complained about her. :( I'm trying to get her to do better.
Depends. Labor law in intensive. Do you need to draft monthly emails to client with updates and progression? 100-110 emails regarding true progress each month would seem impossible.
I have about that many. 50% MVA, 30% premises, 20% assorted other things (employment, med mal, etc.). I oscillate daily between wanting to cry (and often do so) and feeling on top of my shit.
40 cases is a tiny case load in insurance defense. That's a dream. The optimal amount is 75 cases but I have been w a firm that doesn't even count the amount of cases assigned to you & some paralegals had 150+ cases
