I have had my license since 2012. However, I did not go full time until 2017 when I had some money to cover my expenses for 3 months. If you have a support system that will allow you to go to a full-time commission, I would advise you to do it. However, if you do not, I would advise that you wait until you have savings to cover your expenses for a few months. Start building your book of business before you go full-time.
Yes! And always, always- allow for chargebacks. The % that can be taken in advance,… a nice option but it sure adds up if the policy cancels during that time. The amount paid upfront gets charged back and can really suck a paycheck dry!!!
The ability to make a lot of money exists here. Always take 30% of your pay and put it into a savings account that you never touch. You’re going to use this to pay taxes at the end of the year, as you’re a 1099 contractor.
Make sure you have 3-6 months worth of bill payments in savings. It can take some time to get comfortable and become successful.
Don’t let the word no discourage you.
Make professional contacts. Everyone and their mother will try and recruit you. Make sure you know what these companies are offering you and do your research!
Leads are your lifeline. Always have a budget for leads.
Get to know the carriers your writing and be very friendly to the people on the other side of the 800 number. They can sink your business if you upset them. They can also expedite it if you’re friendly.
Once you hit the point that you’re making $70,000-80,000 a year, look into starting an LLC/C Corp/S Corp. talk to a tax advisor for this.
Research what you can write off on your taxes!!!!!
In my opinion, it depends on a lot of variables. For example, are you contracting with multiple companies? Are you looking to focus in a certain area? . (ex. Medicare Supps/ Advantage plans)? Or , are you contracting with a company (ex. Aflac) ? With supplemental policies like Accident, Critical Care, etc. I definitely have some pros and cons that I would love to share with you. If anything, maybe it’s just some food for thought. 😊
Hello, I've been offered a position to sell Aflac policies. I'm nervous. Do you have any information regarding working for Aflac? I have so many questions and don't even know where to begin.
Comm + small base salary would be ideal starting out so you can build your book. Maybe strike deal with Broker to pay back salary as you build your clients? Renewal income will take time, but can be lucrative in long run.
For me personally, I'm not sure that I would take a commission only job and simply because I feel I would stress out not knowing what my paycheck was going to be. Although I don't think I'm that good at sales. Other people are and can do it, but I've worked around sales people before and to see the stress they go through, has always been a turn-off to me. Although I'm being offered a position similar to sales at the moment and I'm a bit nervous. It's an insurance company that would be new to the state that I'm living in now. They're in a neighboring state and have very good reviews, but I saw only one office in my current state that's about 4 hours away from me and it was given a poor review. But then again maybe the person running the office didn't know how to promote it as well? I don't know but I'm also sort of in the same boat with deciding if this is something I want to do or not.
