If they specified figma, you should know it. It’s not difficult to learn, but you can ask if there will be web design projects or it’s as simple as building decks in figma to get a sense of how figma-heavy the job will be. Premier and AE are not very commonly used anyway if you are not an editor or motion designer.
This short term freelance gig about to be the shortest ever lmao
Yes, that is my fear. 😂
Rising Star
Figma is easy - and it’s required now. But you can’t fake it. Lying to get the job? That’s not cool.
Is this a pharma agency by any chance?
If so everyone is in the same boat figma-wise. Don’t stress.
Do you know XD? For front end web I went from photoshop > sketch > XD > figma, it was all a pretty easy transition after moving from photoshop to Sketch. I would answer if asked and I would learn figma. Get a free account and play with it while watching tutorials on YouTube.
After effects is a different beast. I know it but not super well. I am dead set on learning continuously to keep up my value.
Fake it till you make it! Just don't put any additional work on your new colleagues
Why not just start playing around with it now and learn it? If you know photoshop you can learn figma
If you can design, you can pick up Figma quickly. There are some quirks, but you can google your way through it until you get the hang of it. There are tons of great templates available to use as a foundation. Be resourceful. You got this!
I forgot to mention that I am not a web or UX art director/designer, and I don’t have a single web or UX design on my site. The CD scheduled an interview after looking at my portfolio. The shop does web and UX design, but I think my job responsibilities would be content creation for videos and photos. I wish the job description weren't so confusing,
Final update: I got an offer and will start next week! 😆
Adobe Creative Cloud includes more than 25 apps. Editors don’t know Illustrstor and InDesign and art directors don’t typically know Premier or After Effects. If they do, it’s not their strength. So you shouldn’t have to know them all.
Side note: It’s been called Adobe Creative Cloud now since 2013, not Creative Suite. Which kind of suggests the job listing itself is a cut and paste from an old list of requirements. So take it with a grain of salt.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Creative_Cloud
“On May 6, 2013, Adobe announced that they would not release new versions of the Creative Suite and that future versions of its software would be available only through the Creative Cloud.”
Cool. Call it whatever you like. Point is, accuracy and a detailed understanding of the job requirements is maybe not this recruiter’s thing. So OP doesn’t need to worry.
Thank you so much. To be honest, I am overqualified, and based on my interview with the recruiter, I am a great fit. My main concern is Figma at this point. Based on the feedback I received here, I will bring it up because if this is a big issue for them, I would rather not get an offer than fail miserably in the job. I brought it up because I heard most people apply to the jobs they are 80-90 percent qualified for. I have never done this before, so I am very nervous!
Second this. I can design, but I am not a designer and picked it right up. If you know your way around Creative Suite, Figma is a walk in the park. Just start using it and watch a few tutorials. I was able to quickly create app mockups and final icons using a template. If you know the fundamentals of design, you will know how to use Figma.
Figma is easy if they just want you to place images in the file etc. but if they are wanting you to actually create the figma files that’s another story
After talking to the CD and ECD, I brought up the Figma, and it turns out I don’t need to know or even use it for the job. Also, the information on the job post and what the recruiter told me didn't match what the hiring manager was looking for.
Lesson learned. Don’t trust the job post and the recruiter 100% until you talk to the hiring manager. But it is important to be honest with the hiring manager!
If your really photoshop and Illustrator savvy picking up Figma is pretty easy but you’ll need the subscription it’s pretty expensive like 90/mo
Ask them what specifically they’re looking for with Figma
Did they specify premiere and AE? This seems a strange ask for an art director
If you say you know certain software, but don't, they'll know immediately. And you'll be out of a gig.
Yes, that’s my concern. I think, I should bring it up in my interview.
Based on the job description, they are looking specifically for someone to do video and photo shoots from concept to completion, and I have lots of experience in this area. I know there will be some digital and social work too but I don’t know if that would be my primary role. They also mention someone who is proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma. The role is a one-month freelance position with the potential to be full-time. Learning Figma and other software is definitely on my to-do list, but I don’t have enough time to learn them for this freelance job. So, should I bring it up in my interview with the CD? How should I handle it?
Totally! I use premiere as my main program and no way do I know all the Adobe cc programs. They probably didn’t even write the job description right
Also consider using chatgpt for software and technical questions as you learn figma, or new apps in general. It’s helpful in more ways than one can imagine
