That’s a loaded question. It’s an insurance company so you will see similarities to where you are now. With large companies it all comes down to the people you work with and if you have a good manager.
Farmers is different from other insurance companies in how its run. With a traditional insurance company, everything is under one company, including agents and claims. Farmers is not this way. They are separated into two different companies: the management company, which is the agency side, and the exchanges, the company that handles claims. Management company personnel make more money than those on the claims side, for the exact same job. If you work for claims, people will either look down on you (seriously) or feel sorry for you. It’s a crazy dynamic.
Another thing to consider is that Farmers will never be one of the top 5 insurance companies. About 18 years ago, the management portion of the company was sold to Zurich. Zurich now controls Farmers and its direction. As part of the purchase, an additional fee is included on all policies sold (Zurich needs its money), thus making their rates higher than those of other insurance companies, with no way to effectively compete. That’s why they will never be a top company and will always be harping on ways to save money. So if you are comfortable working in an environment that manifests an unconscious feeling of dread, Farmers may be the place for you.
Farmers has no loyalty to their people, especially as they approach their 50s. I lost count of the good people I saw who were managed out of the company as soon as they reached their 50s. We are talking about people who had been working for them for decades, with great reviews, all of a sudden finding themselves under-performing. If you do decide to work here, make sure you have an exit plan in place for when you get older, because they will show you the door.
I will say that Farmers can be a great place to learn about the insurance world. They have a great internal University and do a good job of imparting knowledge to their employees. If you just want a place to chill and not be stressed out, Hard Pass on Farmers. If you want to educate yourself about the insurance world, gain experience, and grow your skills, they are a great company to use as a tool, but make sure you have a plan in place to move forward.
Overall Farmers is a good company I regret that I left
