Remember why you were applying for jobs. It’s natural to be nervous. Partners are great at making you second guess yourself but they are doing it for themselves and the firm. You gotta do what’s best for you. KPMG was my first job and hardest one to leave but after I did I had 0 regrets and never looked back.
Thank you! I appreciate it
I left for internal audit as senior, got a 40% pay bump and 40 hour week (was significantly underpaid at the firm at the time). After about 4 months realized that internal audit was very boring and missed the challenges and growth opportunities in public. The firm I left took me back with open arms, gave another increase on top of my updated comp, so in the end I got a 50% bump by leaving and coming back and was valued more as they realized how much I had been doing after I left. I’d say go for it or you’ll never know what it’s like. It could be a start of a great career with tons of opportunities. Worst case scenario the public will take you back in a heartbeat.
Don't wait until your manager. Jump when you get an opportunity to be a manager at a firm and then try to come back. A partner said to us quit when your manager you'll get more opportunities. That's not always true if you don't have any internal accounting experience at all You might actually not be very good as an internal accountant or an internal auditor. At least when you're at a senior level they expect you to have a steep learning curve.
Take the job. Dig in hard for atleast a year and learn everything you can about 1. your company, 2. your industry, and 3. internal audit.
After a year take time to reflect. Is there more to learn in this role? Do you enjoy the role, the comany, the industry? Do you need to make a move to grow?
You are literally at one of the most exciting times in your career. It is relatively easy to switch companies, industries, and roles. You are the exact opposite of pigeon holed. Enjoy it and make it he most of it.
Perfectly said. Thank you.
You should try something new and see if you like it. Like everyone has said, since you already have pa experience, cpa firms will hire you right back if you choose to go back. We always need bodies lol.
Stick to your plan and leave. When you get to your new place, make the most of it, make a name for yourself, and bring as much value as you can. You may not even be doing IA work all the time as in-house shops also delve into advisory type projects, which can be very interesting and fun, breaking IA’s monotony.
I wouldn’t consider going back to public accounting if I were you. Public accounting doesn’t have much time left as we know it with too many changes going on right now in terms of automation. AI will soon take over a lot of the repetitive time consuming work that even offshoring won’t be needed, and subsequently less staff will be required overall.
I'm looking for Job Audit or any accounting section
