I have seen situations very capable lawyer don’t necessarily “shine” in interviews. While others interview extremely well but may be less strong in day-to-day practice. In reality, how much weight does interview performance carry vs. substance? And are there specific things that cause recruiters to pass on candidates who are otherwise solid?

I think you need to sell yourself as extremely personable and easy to work with. Honestly I’ve gotten way further in BigLaw because of my big personality (and I’m a woman if that means anything) than my actual skill set. People trust in me because I work hard but also am chill to work with and play super nice in the sandbox while still standing ground and not letting people push me around. It’s a delicate line to balance but the people that are able to walk that line end up in leadership positions. I already have the backing of rainmaker partners and am a couple of years away from partnership. So … exude confidence and a bit of humor in interviews, sell yourself as a team player and say you’d love to help grow their practice by developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and delivering top tier work product.

So I just recently got into dating after a break up 3 months ago. I joined some dating apps and have been getting quite a few matches. Like I’ve been on a few and it’s been just talking but I guess I have no clue what to do after. I’m probably just rambling at this point but basically I need advice on actual dates and how to feel it out and what to do. Ty

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

I am looking for a new job at the end of a long career. I have excellent experience in IP and Supply Chain Management. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. The comparable positions at my company are filled by one of the big executive search firms. Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission?
